Día de los Muertos Performance

November 8, 2025

As an artist, I feel a deep moral responsibility to use my art as a means for social change. We serve as reflections of our communities’ struggles and victories, especially for those who are hurting. Though this can be daunting, it is a meaningful reminder to connect with a community grounded in resilience, passion, and love.

During Día de los Muertos, we have a profoundly powerful opportunity to honor our ancestors who fought for us to be here today. I am truly grateful to have been invited for a third time to visit and experience Brownsville, Texas, with Voces Unidas.

This year, I was honored to collaborate with an inspiring group of creatives on a performance piece.

“The performance piece served to honor migrant lives and to provide a communal space for remembrance and healing. This year’s event brought together artist collaborators who created masks and costumes of alebrijes to be used in a ceremonial performance reimagining borders as portals, celebrating the free movement of all creatures, and the essence of migrant resilience.

The event culminated in an expression of communal joy with music and dance. This ceremonial opening of portals invited attendees to straddle both worlds, the living and the undead, and to question prevailing, harmful narratives about migrants, while embodying liminality and free movement.

As the veil between worlds wore thinner, the night became entranced with beautiful sound, sights and spirit. We revel in the opportunity to celebrate in communal joy and we are grateful to have done it with you.”
